Hiking 101

To prepare for a day hike.

  • Conduct research on local hiking spots.
    • Assess the terrain difficulty, which may be classified as easy, moderate, or difficult.
  • Check the weather where you will be hiking.
  • Please dress accordingly to the weather. See the following items below:
    • Waterproof sneakers or hiking boots
    • Long pants and shirts
    • A brimmed hat
    • Sunblock
  • A small backpack to carry the following items:
    • Water bottle
    • Small snack
    • Bug spray
    • First aid kit
    • A fully charged cellphone
  • Most importantly, have a map of your pre-planned hiking trail and be sure to estimate your walking pace. For example, a 3-mile hike may take between 1 to 2 hours, depending on your pace.
